Study Through The Book of Acts – Chapter 1 : Verses 1-5
Have you ever been a witness to murder and in the witness protection program? (Don’t answer that!)
Have you ever seen a UFO? (Okay don’t answer that too.)
Have you ever eaten at In-N-Out and love their food?
If you answered yes to any of these, you have a personal story to tell. You’re a eye-witness. You saw it, felt it, smelled it, heard it, and tasted it. You can taste-ify that In-N-Out burgers and milk shakes are da bomb and out of this world! =) Can I get a witness!
Let’s dive into Chapter 1 of the Book of Acts….
Acts 1:1 – The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
The author is no other than Luke (not Skywalker). Dr. Luke was hired as a consultant by his buddy Theophilus to provide court documents for a case that would prove that Paul was not a terrorist nor anyone in the Jesus movement. Theophilus means lover of God and maybe the name of my future son. You get 2 great nick names, Theo or Phil. Like Theo from 92.3 the Beat. Yep he was Asian. =) Woot!
This book is volume 2 and the Gospel of Luke is volume 1. Luke was witnessing to Theophilus who probably became a born-again believer from reading volume 1 and this next book was icing on the cake. Happy (Spiritual) Birthday Theo! Do you remember your spiritual birthday? It was such a joy for my wife and I to receive a report from our friends that their daughter gave her life to Jesus. To mark the occasion, we made her a birth certificate so she could hang it on her wall. Woot!
Act 1:2 – until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen,
Act 1:3 – to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
When I was little, my family went to a David Cooperfield magic show. I loved it when he levitated and flew around like Superman. Does it bother you when someone does a magic trick and won’t tell you how they did it? Thank God for Youtube and Google ’cause you can find out how all tricks are performed.
Know this…Jesus doesn’t play tricks with us. The creator of the world doesn’t use paid actors and camera tricks like today’s TV illusionist. Sadly, many are in the pulpit using sleight of hand to peddle their own kingdom ideas but God is going to sort them out. You can be sure of that.
Many have tried to disprove the claims of Jesus and many in doing so have had a change of heart like ex-atheist Lee Strobel who is known for his New York Bestseller, The Case for a Creator.
If you have an unbelieving friend or family member, it’s not they don’t believe, but rather they don’t want to be accountable to God because of the sin that ensnares them. And just because they call themselves a “free-thinker” or whatever religion doesn’t change the fact that they will never find true peace and joy, apart from Jesus. They can fake it well and everything may look peachy but in due time they will prove themselves empty and unsatisfied.
Act 1:4 – And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me;
Act 1:5 – “for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
In these verses, I love how we see the reference to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Imagine I’m a Powerball winner and I want to give away 3-million dollars (or 122-million Philippine Pesos) for someone to wait a few days in a haunted house. (Who you gonna call? Ghost Busters!) That would be easy for me ’cause greater is He in me than he who is in the world. But let’s say you are superstitious or a scaredy cat; I bet you will at least try until you hear the first freaky noise and then run out screaming like a little girl. Money is a great motivator and many will do about anything for it. The Promise of the Father is so much better and it’s a gift to anyone with a willing heart.
I’m going to stop at verse 5 and continue again at a later time.
