STUDY THROUGH THE BOOK OF ACTS – CHAPTER 3 : VERSES 12-26
The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, is known for the phrase: Do you know what the rock is cookin’?
As a matter of faact, if some how he was shrunk to a short Filipino, you’d think I was his clone. =) Call me mini-rock!
Alright then, let’s rock-n-roll and finish up Chapter 3.
Act 3:12 – So when Peter saw [it], he responded to the people: “Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?
Peter wasn’t going to take credit for the healing or become some christian celeb. Many ministers and musicians are idolized for their abilities. They fall into a trap of deception, truly believing that have been endowed with power, special favor from God, and/or reached some high degree of spirituality. If they’re going to steal God’s thunder, they’re in for a shocker when God sends down the thunderbolt and drops them dead.
Act 3:13 – “The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let [Him] go.
Act 3:14 – “But you denied the Holy One and the Just, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you,
Act 3:15 – “and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses.
Act 3:16 – “And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which [comes] through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
Act 3:17 – “Yet now, brethren, I know that you did [it] in ignorance, as [did] also your rulers.
Act 3:18 – “But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled.
Act 3:19 – “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,
This is what I call no-hold barred preaching. Who would you feel if someone accused you of murder or something you didn’t do? We all know that familiar feeling of someone throwing you under a bus. But instead of laying a big guilt trip on them, Peter said they did it in ignorance and God wasn’t mad at them for it. I can’t help but hear the words of Jesus on the cross, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:24)
Act 3:20 – “and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before,
Act 3:21 – “whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.
Act 3:22 – “For Moses truly said to the fathers, ‘The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things, whatever He says to you.
Act 3:23 – ‘And it shall be [that] every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’
Act 3:24 – “Yes, and all the prophets, from Samuel and those who follow, as many as have spoken, have also foretold these days.
The audience was familiar with the prophecies of the coming Messiah, the Prince of Life, but were hoping for a political Messiah, instead. Peter was simply reminding and clarifying what they already knew. Peter is like a Hibachi master-chef who has put all the right ingredients together and you see him cook it in front of you. Do you smell what the rock is cookin’? =)
Act 3:25 – “You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’
Act 3:26 – “To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one [of you] from your iniquities.”
Friends, God is inviting us to be part of His Family. Our sins can be blotted out if we come to Jesus for the permanent solution. But the only way to receive it is to repent and if you do, God will refresh you and make you whole and complete. What is repent? You’re going the wrong direction and God wants you to turn around. He’s waiting with open arms right now…and He’s not mad at you, but rather madly in love with you.
I know this decision can be difficult for many. You may not be ready yet and that is okay. I believe God has already been speaking to you in your thoughts and maybe through your circumstances.
Just like the sick man that was looking for money but got something much better than just the next meal. He was physically restored but most importantly (by receiving the Good News), he was made brand-new in Christ.
That finishes up Chapter 3 …Good job if you made it this far in the study.
